Metro Eastside Transit Corridor Phase 2

The Metro Board of Directors approved the certification for the Final Environmental Impact Report (EIR) on May 23, 2024, for the Eastside Transit Corridor Phase 2 project, a 9-mile extension of the E Line further east from its current terminus at Pomona Boulevard and Atlantic Boulevard in East Los Angeles to the City of Whittier. AA started supporting this project in the early 1990s, spearheaded by Genoveva and Chester, and has engaged with thousands of community members since then. This project is one of Metro’s priority projects (originally referred to as “Pillar Projects”) and is an important project to the region, as it will provide commuters in a high travel-demand corridor relief to the limited transportation systems currently available in Southeast LA County. The Board’s approval finalizes the EIR for the project. The Board approved the Locally Approved Alternative (LPA) in 2022 that will extend the E Line to Greenwood Station in Montebello with a Maintenance Storage Facility (MSF) in Montebello. Construction is anticipated to start in 2029.

  • 2009: Chester engaged community members through a series of focus groups on project alternatives.

  • 2015: AA engaged with thousands of community members over the years including this meeting with more than 130 attendees.

  • 2021: Edgar G. and Edna led a hybrid meeting during COVID to continue working towards the Draft EIR.

  • 2023: AA staff completed multiple Walk Audits to help define First/Last Mile community connections.

  • 2024: The Metro Board of Directors – including the project’s champion LA County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis – approved the Final EIR!

  • 2024: Edna and Jesse attended a CBO celebration to highlight their contributions for the First/Last Mile efforts.
